1) Choose Alternatives to Plastic

A great way to cut down on plastic consumption in your household is to choose glass and metal for containers or packaged goods. Most plastic cannot be fully recycled, ending up in the landfills. When it does get recycled, it typically needs to be combined with new plastic, or upcycled into another product (e.g., decking). Glass and metal are typically better choices. Good ways to reduce and reuse with Amaranth include: choosing jarred deodorant, toothpaste and soap bars for shampoo/conditioner. Amaranth also offers a variety of in-store refills on soaps, cleaning products and has several options for deodorant refills. We also offer a recycling program on Routine deodorant jars and sticks-  to recycle your empty items, please bring your jars and sticks into any of our store locations. Refills tend to be much cheaper than buying the same size pre-packaged item off of the shelf time and time again. Combine this with one of our sale days and you save even more, while supporting the environment!

2) Joining The Shell EasyPay Program

Shell Customers can opt-in to the Shell EasyPay program which allows the company to offset customers’ emissions by purchasing independently-verified carbon credits generated from projects that protect or restore natural areas. In Canada, Shell has sourced carbon credits from the Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project. It markets carbon credits generated from the Darkwoods Conservation Area in Southeast British Columbia. The conservation area protects 630km2 of rare inland temperate rainforest, sub-alpine meadows and freshwater systems, and protects mature and old-growth forests from being intensively harvested for timber. Shell is investing in nature as just one of the ways it is working to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050 or sooner, in step with society.

3) Using Ecosia As Your Preferred Web Browser

Ecosia is a fully functional search engine that works with planters around the world to plant trees. The way the search engine works is for you to use the website just like you would with Google, then the advertisements on the engine generate profit for Ecosia that are then turned into profit for their environmental initiatives. The company has privacy policies which make all searches anonymous and any personal information secure. Ecosia plants about 4 million trees a month globally and works in restoring harsh or damaged environments.

4) Switching to Green Energy

Being mindful of your energy consumption is a great way to help reduce wasted power and keep your utility bills down. Taking your utilities a step farther can be looking into green or renewable energy sources. The simplest way to switch to green energy on your utilities is to contact your service provider. Many providers ask you to purchase offsets or certificates - some will even allow you to choose only certified renewable energy producers like wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, etc.

Let’s all do our part to make the world a better place!
