NutraSea & The Benefits of Taking an Omega-3 Supplement
The health benefits of taking Omega-3
What is an omega-3?
Odds are you’ve heard about omega-3 fatty acids. And for good reason! From brain development to heart health, they’ve been found to have many different health benefits. Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, meaning we must get them from our diet, as our bodies cannot produce them on their own.
The three key types of omega-3 fats are:
1. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid): Found in certain high-fat plant foods, especially flax
seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.
2. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid): Found in fatty fish, seafood, fish oil and algal oil.
3. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): Found in fatty fish, seafood, fish oils, and algal oil.
It is the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA that are believed to be responsible for many of the health benefits commonly associated with omega-3 and while ALA is an omega-3 it must be converted into the longer-chain EPA or DHA omega-3 fatty acids. This means that foods like green leafy vegetables, nuts, and seeds are healthy foods to get in the diet and sources of ALA, but they are not very efficient at providing EPA and DHA due to this limited conversion. The most direct way of providing EPA and DHA for the body is either through foods rich in EPA and DHA or through the consumption of fish or algal oils.
What are the health benefits?
Omega-3 fatty acids have been studied thoroughly over the years and with good reason. Research suggests that within specific dosage ranges they can positively impact many aspects of our physical and mental health, some of these include:
Support the maintenance of good health
Helps to support and maintain cardiovascular health
Helps to reduce serum triglycerides
In conjunction with conventional therapy, help to reduce the pain in rheumatoid arthritis in adults
Help to support the development of the brain, eyes and nerves in children up to 12 years of age
Choosing the best omega-3 supplement
Many people choose to supplement their diet with a fish or algal oil as a direct source of
the health promoting omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. When it comes to choosing the
best omega-3 fish or algal oil supplement, here are some of the considerations to keep in
mind:
Taste
One of the most common questions people ask when they’re looking for an omega-3 fish
oil supplement is, “What does it taste like?”, be sure to look for an omega-3 supplement
that is available in a flavour you love. NutraSea’s Omega-3 supplements are known for
their exceptionally clean, light taste that makes them easy to enjoy.
Absorption
One of the most overlooked factors when choosing an omega-3 supplement is how well
it’s absorbed. Research has suggested that omega-3 supplementation with oils in the
triglyceride form lead to better absorption compared to those in the ethyl ester form. All
NutraSea’s omega-3 fish oils are in the triglyceride form.
Purity
When selecting a supplement, choosing a product that has been third party tested is a
great way to ensure the product is high quality. All NutraSea omega-3 fish-oil tests are
